Bergen City Bike is a shared transport service, offering bikes for rental on a short term basis, with
stations located in Bergen’s urban area. Bikes are an important mobility option in a modern city,
limiting pollution, congestion, and serving as a valid alternative to public transport. However, recent
studies show that customers display frustration over the current availability of bicycles, as stations are
frequently empty (Bock & Berg, 2019). Thus, the objective of this paper is to improve the availability
of Bergen City Bikes. To accomplish this, we utilize a Descrete-Event Simulation model of Bergen City
Bike’s current system and experiment with various modifications.
The model simulates two of Bergen City Bike’s core processes; the bike transit process and the bike
repositioning process. The bike transit process, which involves simulating customer trips, deviates 0.8%
from reality in terms of customer quantity, and roughly 14% in transit demand. The bike repositioning
process involves manually reallocating bikes with a vehicle. The model is similarly accurate in
replicating this process, as retrieval and refill operations are conducted on applicable low and high
demand stations, respectively.
